Design Department was organized by order of the Director of  Uralvagonzavod G. Pavlozkiy оn May 10, 1935. Dmitry Lorenzo, Former Deputy Chief Engineer of Uralvagonstroy, was appointed the first Chief Designer. This day is considered the birthday of Ural Railcar- Building Design Office of Uralvagonzavod.

Initially, Design Department employed 6 persons.  But soon young specialists graduated from technical schools and institutes, practitioners from other plants, specialists of the Head Car Design Office of Car-Building Industry went to work at  Design Department .

The Head Car Design Office of Car-Building Industry was liquidated, its archive was transferred to Design Department of Uralvagonzavod  in December 1937  . The stuff of 50 engineers and of 30 UPC had been appointed into Design Department in January 1938. For 1938  Design Department of Uralvagonzavod  was awarded a significant stock of orders including gondola redesign (gondola car) with 60 ton carrying load with the metal skin from low-alloyed steels, designs development for 16.5 ton platform of 750 mm gauge, 100 ton gondola, two-axle cast bogie and many other things.

The manufacturing of cars at Uralvagonzavod was discontinued in summer 1941. According to the decision of the Government   Design Department was evacuated with the archives to Barnaul, where the team arrived in January 1942. Among the evacuees were D. Lorenzo, I. Zherebin, M. Veremjev, A. Shastin, B. Blagodatskij, A. Zavadich, A. Samsonov,  A. Peters, S. Sysoev , W. Fedotov, E. Grishina, R. Anferov, N. Sazykin, Kochetkov, S. Pavetkin and members of their families.

On  Altai  designers worked  on restoration of broken cars, on the creation of car design for transportation  of military cargo and  also on development of new cars.

In the 50-60s the Chief Designer Department was designing the versatile car tailored for transportation of all kinds of cargoes hauled in gondola cars, box cars and on platforms. During this period small-size journal box assembly was being developed and launched into production, operating cargo fleet of cars switched to roller bearings; development of the new, more flexible spring set for the bogies being in service; full retrofit of the serial gondola car being produced in bulk at UVZ and other car-building facilities; development of 94, 100 and 125 ton six-axle and eight-axle gondola cars of a higher capacity.

In early 1970, V. Dvuhglavov headed Chief Design Department of Uralvagonzavod .

It would not be feasible to switch the facility to production of whole-metal gondola cars without new developments of Chief Designer Department. Their serial production commenced in 1973 with gondola car model 12-532 developed during 1968-1972. The first whole-metal gondola car was developed on August 27, 1973. In late seventies the design of whole-metal gondola car with blind-end walls model 12-119 started.

121 projects of freight cars and 24 projects of bogies and automatic couplers had   been developed during 1936 - 1980. The gondola car with blind- end doors model 12-532 was produced in September 1980. The car was certified by the State Quality Mark.

In 1980s more advanced gondola car model 12-119 versus gondola car model 12-532 was refined and launched into serial production by CDD specialists.

Gondola car model 12-132 was adopted by the Interdepartmental Commission in 1988.  Gondola car was developed by designers in two versions: with carrying capacity of 70 and 75 tons. The main difference from prototype of the gondola model 12-119 was a higher body space up to 88, m3. Gondola car model 12-132 by its technical characteristics fully complied with the best foreign cars. It was certified for the Federal Railway in 1998.

In early 1990s taking into account the demands of some chemical industrial facilities, Chief Designer Department got back to designing of gondola cars with the lift-off cover for transportation of cargoes requiring shelter from atmospheric fallouts.  One of the first projects was tested in summer 1992. Gondola car model 12-146 with two lift-off covers designed on the basis of gondola car model 12-132 in 1994.  Gondola car with a dumb rounded bottom and sloping body walls model 12-175 developed in 1997, the first time in Russia and launched into production in 1998.

Tank car model 15-150   developed according to the new technical requirements IPU and   launched into production in 1993. It became the progenitor of a large number of models. A little later tank car models 15-5103, 15-5103-02, 15-5103-03 started, which differed primarily by boilers (with sloping axle).

Tank car model 15-144 for transportation of liquefied propane-butane  was designed by  Chief Design Department together with the designers of the plant ‘Prostor’ by order of the ‘Gazprom’. The first two tanks were built in October 1993.

Tank car model 15-156 to transport viscous oil products, equipped with steam-heated cover was based on model 15-150.  The first such tank car was tested in 1995.

Over the decades Chief Design Department was the leader of the domestic car building.

Even after the collapse of the USSR Chief Design Department remained the sole developer of the most important products of the car-building industry in the former Union. None of the car-building facilities of the CIS countries and the Ukraine were allowed to make any modifications to the design of car bogies and couplers without the permission of Chief Design Department.

All the standard specifications, state and industry standards for freight car- building were developed with the direct participation of Chief Design Department.

So far, the bogie model 18-100 is the main type of freight car bogie, which reliability and durability has been continuously improved. Design documentation for the bogie 18-100, its components and spare parts are used by more than 50 companies in Russia and in the CIS countries, as well as under license in the Czech Republic, China, India and France.

On February 2, 1994  Chief Design Department was renamed  Ural Railcar-Building Design Office (UKBV).

Since 2000 Uralvagonzavod initiated the building up of new generation freight cars  within the framework of the ‘Comprehensive program reorganization  and  development of domestic locomotive and car building…’

The universal new generation gondola car designed with a higher operational reliability in modification UHL with improved strength and service life parameters. Work continued on developing specialized tank cars, in particular to transport pentane tank car model 15-P and to transport liquefied hydrocarbon gases – tank car model 15-144-01.

Two types of hoppers designed to transport mineral fertilizers models 19-187 and 19-187-01. Four-axle  flat cars model 13-198  was developed for  transportation of   timber and model 13-192 for  transportation of  container-tanks, containers of various dimensions and special equipment under special conditions.

New generation cars are impossible without a bogie with increased carrying capacity.  Such bogie was developed by UKBV for the first time in Russia:  bogie model 18-194-1 with axle load 25t and design speed 120 km/h. The bogie had a new technical modification, with improved running performance of loaded and empty car and with increased operational reliability.

Serial production of bogies was launched in 2008. The most mass serial bogies designed with the axial load of 25 t.

Advanced automatic coupler with high feasibility and operating performance incorporating semi-rigid automatic coupling СА-4 with a new coupling gear, springing centering unit, automatic coupler assembly with the yoke, disconnecting drive, welded backstops developed by UKBV jointly with VNIIZhT (Research & Development Institute of Rail Transportation) constitutes an important component of new generation freight cars.

The material on the basis of high-molecular silicone rubber was chosen as the mass carrier.

Automatic coupler model AПЭ-95-УВЗ was designed, produced and tested in 2000. Since 2001 this devices were being equipped on tank cars.

Elastomer draft gear АПЭ-120-УВЗ with 120 mm working travel and high power capacity was concurrently under development.

On April 1, 2013 UKBV was transformed into OOO UKBV (The Ural Railcar-Building Design Office, LLC).

The Ural Railcar-Building Design Office is a leading one, famous for its innovation designs. All car-building enterprises and many car-repair works of Russia and CIS countries make use of projects of the Ural designers. Specialists of the Design Office design brand new cars and bogies with increased axleload and improve serially manufactured vehicles to optimize their strength properties and maintainability.

OOO UKBV introduced seven of the most recent innovative developments at the IX International exhibition “EXPO 1520”, held in September 2013 in Shcherbinka, including hopper car the body of which is made of composite material. With its load capacity and body space hopper car model 19-5167 has no analogues in the CIS, however, the highlight of the hopper car is a total rejecting steel elements which are the object of corrosion from mineral fertilizers.

Uralvagonzavod received a prestigious international JEC Awards for achievements in the field of composite technologies, materials and structures.
